Turn a photo into a story video: your pet, toy or kid's drawing as the hero
To turn a photo into a story video on BakeVideos, add it as the Reference image in the composer and type the story in one sentence. If the photo shows a character (your cat, a plush bunny, your kid's drawing, a mascot or you), it becomes the main character of an animated story, painted from the photo in every scene in the style you choose, with a voice, captions and music. If it shows a product, it is used as the product instead. Use a photo you have the rights to.
How it works
- Open the studio and tap Reference, or drop a photo onto the box.
- The photo is read in a moment. A chip names what it found ("golden retriever", "plush rabbit") and its role: "main character" or "product".
- Type the story. Say what happens and how it ends, and refer to "the cat in the photo" or use its name. With a character photo, Auto switches to an animated story. If you had picked Real footage, the studio says real footage cannot show your character and offers "Make it animated" or "Keep real footage".
- Bake. A cast sheet is painted from your photo first, then every scene with the character is painted from that sheet, so it looks the same throughout (how that works). Narration, voice, captions and music are added, in a few minutes.
- Adjust. On a paid plan you can repaint any one picture in your own words or switch the picture style. On any plan you can change music, captions, colours and voice.
The character's looks come from the photo and are never rewritten. If the photo shows two characters, say a dog and a cat on a sofa, both join the cast.
What kind of photo works
| Photo | What it becomes | Tip for a good result |
|---|---|---|
| Your pet | the hero, same species, coat and markings | one animal, in focus, whole body if you can |
| A plush toy or figure | the hero, same shape, colours and materials | the whole toy in frame, plain background |
| A child's drawing | the hero, redrawn in the video's style from the drawing's shapes and colours | a flat, well-lit photo or scan of the page |
| A mascot | the hero | a front view, nothing covering it |
| Yourself or another person | the hero, same face, hair, build and clothes | see the note on photos of people below |
| A product | used as the product: shown over the clips in a real-footage video, or painted into the scenes of an animated story | a clean shot of the product alone |
Photos of people. The picture service sometimes refuses to redraw a photo of a real person. Then the main character is painted from a written description of the photo, and the studio tells you; it may not look exactly like you.
Example briefs
Each link opens the studio with the story typed in. Add your photo, then bake.
- A 45-second animated story: the cat in the photo becomes the captain of a tiny spaceship and saves the moon from a cloud of space mice. 3D cartoon, funny, warm ending.
- A 40-second bedtime story: the plush bunny in the photo goes looking for the night-light star that fell behind the bed and brings it home before morning. Watercolour storybook style, soft and slow.
- A 30-second story starring the dog in the photo: he is the only one in the neighbourhood who notices the lost balloons, and he returns them one by one. 2D cartoon, cheerful.
- A 40-second story about the monster in my daughter's drawing: he is scared of children until a little girl invites him to her tea party. 2D cartoon, gentle, funny ending.
Give the hero one clear want (find the star, save the moon), one problem on the way, and an ending you can say in a few words. Watercolour storybook and 2D cartoon suit bedtime stories; 3D cartoon suits funny pet adventures. All eight styles are in the AI story video generator guide.
Rights: use a photo you have the rights to
The studio says it under every reference photo, and it is the rule that matters most here.
- Your own photos of your pet, your toys or yourself are fine.
- Other people need to agree before their face becomes a cartoon on the internet, friends in the background included.
- A drawing by your child is theirs too. Ask them first.
- Toys and mascots of famous characters belong to someone else. BakeVideos will not paint a copyrighted character by name, and a video built around one may not be yours to post.
- Photos from the web are almost never yours to use.
Everything BakeVideos adds (narration, music, the AI pictures) needs no attribution and can be posted on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. The rights to your photo stay your responsibility.
Photos of children: some common sense
A story starring your own child can be a lovely keepsake. Before posting it publicly, treat it like any photo of them online:
- Consider a stand-in. Their favourite toy, their own drawing or a pet makes the same story without putting their face in a public video.
- Keep identifying details out of the story. Use a first name or a nickname, and leave out their school, town and anything else that says where to find them.
- Never upload other people's children without their parents' permission.
- Know where the photo lives. It is stored with the video it belongs to, as our privacy policy explains, and you can delete the video from the studio at any time.
What it does not do
- It does not put the photo itself in the video. Your photo is the model for a character in new AI-animated scenes.
- Text stories do not take a reference image.
- Repainting a picture is on paid plans. On the free video you can swap a picture for a stock clip or upload your own.
Your first video is free (Google sign-in, no card). Add your photo and write a story.
FAQ
Can I turn a photo of my pet into a cartoon video? Yes. Add the photo as the reference image, type a story ("the dog in the photo saves the neighbourhood's lost balloons"), and name a style such as 2D cartoon or 3D cartoon. Your pet is painted from the photo in every scene.
Can AI make a whole video from one photo? BakeVideos uses one photo as the main character of a new story: it writes or reads the narration, paints each scene with your character in it, and adds a voice, captions and music. The photo is the model for the character; the video is made of new AI-animated scenes.
Can I make an animated story starring myself? Yes, with a photo of yourself as the reference image. The picture service sometimes refuses to redraw photos of real people; then the character is painted from a description of your photo and may not look exactly like you. The studio tells you when that happens.
Is it safe to upload photos of my kids? Upload only photos you have the rights to, and think before posting a child's face publicly. A toy, a drawing or a pet makes a good stand-in hero. Uploaded photos are stored with the video they belong to (see the privacy policy), and you can delete that video from the studio at any time.
What happens if I upload a product photo? It is used as the product. In a real-footage video it is cut out and shown over the clips; in an animated story it is painted into the scenes.
